Overview

This one-day, hands-on training introduces engineers, system architects and administrators to the Yocto Project — a flexible framework for building custom Linux systems for embedded devices. Participants will gain a practical understanding of how to create, configure and maintain reproducible embedded Linux environments, using real hardware provided on site.

The course will be conducted in English and takes place on site in Bochum, one day before the emBO++ conference.
Participation is limited to ensure an intensive learning experience.

Basic skills in Linux command line, SSH and Git are required.

What you will learn

The training combines theory with hands-on exercises to help participants become confident in building and maintaining their own embedded Linux systems. Core topics include:
• Introduction to the Yocto Project and OpenEmbedded
• Requirements and architecture of embedded systems
• Building Linux images from scratch using BitBake
• Working with layers, recipes and distributions
• Using essential Yocto tools (bitbake-layers, devtool, KAS, WIC)
• Creating and customizing SDKs and eSDKs
• Licensing, SPDX and software compliance
• Strategies for updates, CI/CD and lifecycle management

Optional deep dives include kernel work, debugging, performance tuning, and hardware bring-up.

Your trainer

Anna-Lena Marx is Tech Lead for Embedded Linux at inovex.
With degrees in Embedded Systems (M.Sc.), Computer Science, and Electrical Engineering, she specializes in robust, scalable embedded systems based on the Yocto Project. Her expertise covers Linux kernel development and Embedded Android, with a strong focus on lifecycle and compliance strategies for long-term product support.
In her spare time, she develops a Zephyr-based open-source e-book reader.
